Community Connection: Meet Dr. Goodnight, Watford City’s Newest Pediatrician
Introducing Pediatric Physical Therapy at McKenzie Health
by Dr. Waco Goodnight, Pediatrician
Hello, Watford City!
My name is Dr. Waco Goodnight, and I’m honored to introduce myself as the newest pediatrician at McKenzie Health. My family and I recently relocated here from Lawrence, Kansas, and we couldn’t be more excited to call Watford City our new home. I’d like to take a moment to share a little about myself, my background, and the commitment I bring to supporting your children’s health and well-being.
My Journey to Pediatrics
I grew up in a small town in southwest Kansas, where life was centered on family, hard work, and strong community ties. Living in a rural area, I came to understand how deeply a good doctor can impact a small town. Those early experiences inspired me to pursue medicine, with the hope of one day giving back in the same way.
After earning my medical degree, I completed my pediatric training at Phoenix Children’s Hospital, where I worked alongside some of the most talented and compassionate providers in the field. During my time there, I developed a deep understanding of pediatric care and a commitment to treating each child as a unique individual.
Over the past decade, I’ve had the privilege of practicing in both urban and rural communities, gaining a wide range of experience. Now, I’m thrilled to bring that experience to Watford City, where I can form close connections with families and contribute to the health of this wonderful community.
A Collaborative Approach to Care
As a pediatrician, my goal is to provide excellent care that’s tailored to the needs of each child and family. Whether it’s a baby’s first well-check, navigating adolescence, or managing a complex medical condition, I believe that good healthcare begins with open communication and trust.
Preventive medicine is especially important to me. From vaccinations and regular check-ups to addressing mental health and fostering healthy habits, I focus on helping families build a strong foundation for their children’s lifelong well-being.
At McKenzie Health Center, I’ll be providing care for children of all ages. My approach is a partnership—I’ll work closely with you to understand your child’s needs, answer your questions, and create a plan that fits your family’s goals and values.
A Bit About Me
Outside of work, I’m a husband and father of four. My wife and I have been married for 15 years, and our kids—ages 7 to 14—keep us on our toes. Parenting is a constant adventure, full of joys and challenges, and I bring that perspective into my work as a pediatrician.
As a family, we love to stay active and spend time outdoors. Since moving to North Dakota, we’ve been exploring all the unique activities this area has to offer. We’re excited to try ice fishing and figure skating, as well as camping and hiking in the stunning landscapes of our new home state. Skiing has long been a favorite family activity, and we’re looking forward to finding new slopes to conquer here.
While we’re not avid mountain climbers, we do love the outdoors and appreciate the natural beauty that surrounds us. We also enjoy traveling, meeting new people, and experiencing the rich cultures and history of different places.
Why Watford City?
When I began looking for a new opportunity, I knew I wanted to be in a community where relationships matter. Watford City immediately stood out. The warmth of the people, the strong sense of community, and the beauty of the area made it clear that this was where my family and I were meant to be.
As someone who grew up in a small town, I value the kind of environment where neighbors know each other and families work together to make their community stronger. I’m excited to contribute to that spirit here in Watford City.
What You Can Expect
At McKenzie Health Center, I’ll be offering comprehensive pediatric care, including routine check-ups, developmental screenings, and management of acute and chronic conditions. My approach is holistic, focusing on the physical, emotional, and social well-being of each child.
One area I’m particularly passionate about is mental health. Supporting children and adolescents through challenges like anxiety and depression is more important than ever, and I’m committed to providing resources and support to families navigating these issues.
Preventive care is another priority. I believe that small, consistent steps—like encouraging proper nutrition, good sleep, and regular physical activity—can make a big difference in a child’s overall health. My goal is to empower parents with the tools and knowledge they need to keep their kids healthy and happy.
Staying Grounded
While I love what I do, I know that work-life balance is essential. Moving to Watford City is not just about advancing my career—it’s also about giving my family the opportunity to thrive in a safe, welcoming environment.
We’re looking forward to participating in community events, meeting new friends, and becoming part of the fabric of this town. Whether it’s cheering at a local sports game, attending a festival, or simply enjoying a walk in the park, we’re eager to immerse ourselves in all that Watford City has to offer.
A Note of Gratitude
I want to express my gratitude to the community for welcoming my family and me with open arms. Moving to a new town can be both exciting and challenging, but the kindness we’ve experienced here has made the transition so much easier.
I’m excited to meet many of you in the coming months, whether it’s in the clinic, at a community event, or around town. My door is always open, and I’m here to support your children’s health in any way I can.
Thank you for trusting me with the care of your most precious family members. I’m honored to serve as your pediatrician and look forward to building lasting relationships with all of you. Together, we can help Watford City’s children grow and thrive, ensuring a bright future for our community.
